Joseph R. McClellan MD, FACC FACP

Senior Consultant

 

Joseph R. McClellan, M.D., Senior Consultant with Strategy Solutions, has held numerous healthcare leadership and management positions in industry, government, universities, academic medical centers, and integrated health systems. In this capacity, Dr. McClellan provides strategic support for health care and community health improvement projects, and leadership development training for health care boards and leadership teams.

 

Prior to his work with Strategy Solutions, Dr. McClellan was President of the Caritas Physician Network and Senior Vice President of the Physician and Clinical Services Division of Caritas Christi Health Care System, Boston, MA. He was a member of the senior management team that achieved the major financial and clinical turnaround of the health system that returned Caritas to viability.

 

Dr. McClellan has also served as Vice President, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer, Director of the Heart Institute, and Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and Surgery at Hamot Medical Center. Under Dr. McClellan’s leadership, Hamot focused on achieving outstanding quality outcomes and achieved unprecedented growth with outstanding quality outcomes resulting in institutional recognition by Solucient and HealthGrades as a Top 100 Hospital, by both the Advisory BoardTM and The EdgeTM as a national model for cardiovascular programs, and by U.S. News & World Report as one of America's Top 50 centers for Heart Care and Heart Surgery.

 

Dr. McClellan’s background includes leadership positions at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Philadelphia, PA where he was Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine at Presbyterian Medical Center and Associate Director of the Cardiovascular Medicine Program and participated in the clinical turnaround of cardiovascular care at the University of Pennsylvania, from being cited by Business Week as the "worse value in American Medicine" to becoming a superior clinical and academic program.

 

Dr. McClellan's academic appointments at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine included Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and in the Department of Radiology. He also held leadership and faculty appointments at Duke University, Georgetown University, The University of Massachusetts, and Brown University Schools of Medicine and the Department of Critical Care Medicine at the National Institutes of Health where he was co-director of this program.

 

Dr. McClellan’s received an undergraduate degree in biology from Providence College and a medical honor degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed a medicine residency and served as Chief Medical Resident at Duke University followed by a fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at Georgetown University with Dr. W. Proctor Harvey. Dr. McClellan was certified by the American Board in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Critical Care Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American College of Cardiology. He has authored numerous scientific presentations, articles, reviews and book chapters and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Regional Cancer Center, Alliance Health Plan, Penn State Erie School of Engineering, and the Pennsylvania Voluntary Hospital Association.

 

Dr. McClellan and his wife Marilyn have 2 children, Joseph E. McClellan PhD, an analytic chemist and specialist in proteomics and Katie M. McClellan, a Chicago attorney. They currently reside in Fairview, PA.
