
Charlene Bebko, Ph.D.
Research Director
Charlene Bebko brings a background of both business and academic experience to her work in nonprofit and social cause marketing. She received her Ph.D. under the guidance and direction of Dr. Gerald Zaltman at the University of Pittsburgh, one of the two researchers responsible for the development of the field of social cause marketing. She has developed and taught three non-profit and/or social cause marketing courses: Social Change: Making it Happen, Social Cause Marketing for Non-Profit Organizations, and Marketing for Non-Profit Organizations.
Both her health care marketing consulting and academic research in services marketing and outcomes assessment have contributed to the development of 13 journal articles, over 30 published proceedings and 30 national and international presentations. Dr. Bebko's research has appeared in The Journal of Services Marketing, Journal of Health Care Marketing, Health Marketing Quarterly and Journal of Hospital Marketing. Furthermore, Dr. Bebko received the 1998 Indiana University of Pennsylvania Distinguished Faculty Award for Research.
She has a national award winning reputation in services marketing research, recognized by the American Marketing Association. In both 1992 and 1993, Dr. Bebko’s special expertise in health care marketing was recognized by the AMA’s Academy for Health Care Marketing, when she was awarded a Bronze Award in Health Care Marketing Research.
Dr. Bebko was awarded an internship through the Advertising Education Foundation, Visiting Professor Program, in 1997 and spent that time with The Advertising Council, New York, NY. Her work included the development of an instrument to gauge incremental social change and was the direct result of a sabbatical she took in 1998-1999 working with them. Besides the research with the Ad Council, she has conducted research in social cause marketing which has produced two journal articles, one journal article in its second review, four published national conference proceedings and presentations, and six national conference presentations.
Dr. Bebko has completed over 70 Marketing Research Projects and/or Marketing Plans for non profit organizations in conjunction with students enrolled in her research or management classes, 1988 - 2002. The IUP Marketing Students won First Place in the Marketing Plan Competition by AMA Pittsburgh Chapter Project Share (non Profit strategic plan marketing contest) in both 2002 and 2003.
